Assault Survivor Kits, Launched in 2015, Addresses Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

During an Assistance League® National Conference in September 2014, member Sarah Foulds discussed a philanthropic program called Assault Survivor Kits® with several other chapters.

The program aimed to provide clothing for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence to wear once they complete their examination and when their original clothing is retained for evidentiary purposes.

The membership agreed, and the program was launched in the summer of 2015.

The first partnership of the chapter was with the Bay Area Turning Point shelter, and kits were provided to the Crisis Team. The Crisis Team works with five hospitals and fifteen police, sheriff, and constable departments in four counties.

Partnerships expanded to the Friendswood, La Porte, and League City police departments. The Bridge Over Troubled Water joined our partner list next. The chapter partnered with hospitals – UTMB Galveston in 2017, Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, and Memorial Hermann Southeast in 2021 – and our newest partner, Jerry Garcia, Harris County Constable Precinct 2 this fall.

Those who require kits are women (85%), men (10%), and children (5%).

Assistance League® of the Bay Area is committed to supporting the victims and striving towards eradicating this traumatic experience for everyone.
