The goal of Project Seniors is to develop and implement projects to benefit seniors and the homeless in the community. Working in conjunction with Escondido’s Park Avenue Community Center, the committee provides little luxuries and entertainment for seniors who live independently with minimum income. This includes hosting a thank you spring luncheon for over 80 Center special volunteers who not only receive assistance from the Center, but also go out of their way to help their fellow seniors. After the Center provides the committee with a list of retirement homes, the members make over 216 Christmas stockings filled with toiletries, knitted scarves and gift cards to be delivered to these homes for seniors. Partnering with Palomar Pomerado Health, the program helps provide 16 seniors with Lifeline medical alert service. In addition, the committee volunteers fill 275 bags with food, toiletries, hats, socks and depending on the time of the year, fans and blankets, to be distributed to the homeless.
Knit Wits Group provides hand-knitted hats and scarves to seniors under the umbrella of Project Seniors at Escondido’s Park Avenue Community Center and at Interfaith Community Services. The group meets monthly and welcomes new knitters to join them.

“I’m really a shy person but I started attending the senior events sponsored by Assistance League. At the Independence Day Celebration with Peter Seltzer playing the guitar, his music made me so happy that I jumped up to dance!”
