The staff looks forward to helping their patients develop great smiles that will last a lifetime!

Mentoring MG_6574a_600Wx400H_PS8

For over 30 years, CAMEO has supported under-served, academically promising students from the Long Beach Unified School District high schools and Long Beach City College. Our member volunteers are working professionals who provide one-on-one mentoring support to enhance each student’s educational and personal development.

ALa Carte

Members of the ALa Carte program have been providing supportive services to hospitalized children and young adults ages 2-20 and their parents at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach for more than 30 years.

Assault Survivor Kits

The Assault Survivor Kits program works with forensic nurses to provide clothing and hygiene kits for victims of sexual assault whose clothes are collected as evidence by the police. Wear home clothing, underwear, socks, and a variety of hygiene items are included in the kits which provide comfort and dignity in time of crisis.

Assisteens Programs

Assisteens Auxiliary provides community volunteer opportunities for approximately 100 young people in grades 9 through 12. Its goals are to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, poise, public speaking, and leadership skills.

Howard and Asian Art Collection

Tours of the Howard and Asian Art Collection, a museum-quality collection of Asian artifacts located in the Assistance League of Long Beach Philanthropic Center, are conducted by trained member docents for seventh-grade students in the Long Beach Unified School District and to community groups upon request.

Kids on the Block

Kids on the Block is an educational puppet program for elementary school children that addresses behavioral issues they face today. Popular programs include You’re Not the Boss of Me (Bullying), Rescue and Report, and Alternatives to Violence.

Launching Literacy

Launching Literacy is a partnership between Assistance League of Long Beach and Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). Underserved children in grades K-1 in need of extra individualized reading instruction are selected by district personnel. Our trained volunteers work with the children on pre-reading skills in small groups using lessons developed by literacy coaches.

The Scholarship Committee provides financial awards to students for academic performance at a variety of educational institutions including Long Beach City College (LBCC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). Financial support is also provided to Long Beach Unified School District for its music and vocal programs at the middle and high schools. Two endowed scholarships from past Assistance League members are also awarded annually in accordance with the wishes of the donors.

Vocational Training

Beginning in 2013, students with mild to moderate disabilities who were in a protective and directed school environment through high school and are now in the Adult Community Transition Program have been coming to the Thrift & Vintage Shop to work in various capacities. These students, aged 18-22, work along with Assistance League member volunteers as they gain valuable and transferrable skills for their future employment. At the same time, the Thrift & Vintage Shop benefits greatly from their involvement.
