Assistance League of Mid-Missouri is excited to announce the establishment of the annual
Carter-MacLellan Make-a-Difference Scholarships!
The Carter-MacLellan Make-a-Difference Scholarship was initiated in 2019 to honor two of
Assistance League’s former board presidents, Judy Carter and Becky MacLellan. Carter and MacLellan
led the effort to establish Upscale Resale®, the popular retail outlet opened in 1999.
The $500 scholarships will be awarded annually to recognize one graduating senior at each of
Columbia Public Schools’ four high schools who has demonstrated a heart for volunteering and a
commitment to serve others. The recipients will be chosen by Assistance League’s Scholarship
Committee in conjunction with the high schools’ guidance offices.
The Assistance League chapter also awards numerous other scholarships throughout the year,
including the Assisting Women’s Achievement Scholarships given out at Columbia Area Career Center,
Columbia College, MU’s Sinclair School of Nursing and College of Education, and Stephens College; the
Women’s Military Heroes Award at Columbia College; and the Welcome Home Training Program
Award at the Columbia Area Career Center. The Mid-Missouri chapter also funds awards for individual
programs at Columbia Area Career Center, including the LPN and Welding programs.
Since 2004, Assistance League of Mid-Missouri has given out over $489,000 in scholarships and
awards to 295 recipients.
Assistance League of Mid-Missouri is a nonprofit volunteer organization serving needs of adults
and children in the Columbia community through its philanthropic programs. Proceeds from the
Upscale Resale Shop, Cookie Connection, Community Campaigns and individual donations fund the
costs of service programs helping people in Columbia.
