Building Children’s Health and Confidence

During a three-year study of children’s well-being in our community, Assistance League of Long Beach concluded that with more than 70% of the children in our Long Beach schools living in or near poverty, many children had unmet needs. Although Operation School Bell® and the Orthodontic Program already provide orthodontic care to hundreds and free new school uniforms to thousands of Long Beach Unified School District students, still more children need these services.

That’s why we’re building the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation Children’s Center. It will transform an 8,200 square foot commercial building directly adjoining the current Cherese Mari Laulhere Philanthropic Center, creating a unified campus devoted to the health and education needs of our community’s most vulnerable children and young people. When completed in the fall of 2019, the Miller Children’s Center will allow us to expand Operation School Bell to provide uniforms and school supplies to 12,000 students and will permit expanding the capacity of the Orthodontic Program to provide 1,000 young people with beautiful smiles.

Additionally, the Cherese Mari Laulhere Philanthropic Center will be renovated with new classrooms and flexible meeting and work spaces to enhance all Assistance League’s programs.

As of June 2019, the Creating Smiles Campaign has raised more than $5 million toward an initial financial goal of $5.85 million. Assistance League of Long Beach is now reaching out to friends and the community and invites your generous support for the Miller Children’s Center.  Join a community of generous donors who care for the well-being of children in Long Beach.
