Prospective Member Orientation
Prospective members attend a light-hearted social as an informational orientation. Board members and new member trainers are able to spend time answering questions, and explaining their responsibilities.
New Member Orientation
The classroom training enables each new member to learn about Assistance League’s volunteer opportunities. During the training, discussions regarding an overview of National Assistance League, member responsibilities, the thrift shop and training of various positions, and a presentation on each philanthropic program by each chair are shared. By the time the training is completed, each member will be given a mentor. A mentor will continue to guide a new member in becoming more knowledgeable about our chapter.

The DreamCatchers Auxiliary of Assistance League of Huntington Beach was established in 1993 by women who wanted to serve the community but whose schedules-whether work or other responsibilities- limited their volunteer time. Since receiving its charter in 1994, DreamCatchers has provided women with time constraints an opportunity to “give back” through its support of some key Assistance League of Huntington Beach’s programs and its own philanthropic endeavors.
We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 7-8:30 p.m. DreamCatchers staff the Thrift Store on the first Saturday of the month. Each of our members volunteers for three of those Saturdays a year. We also participate in the annual fundraising event in the Spring.

DreamCatchers members participate in Operation School Bell® a signature program of Assistance League that helps clothe school children of low income families to maximize their scholastic success.. Our Auxiliary contributes monies to our chapter to help fund this program and members can volunteer to work alongside chapter members at local Target stores on Operation School Bell nights.
DreamCatchers also supports the Assistance League of Huntington Beach’s Operation New Beginnings which encompasses many programs. DreamCatchers help provide scholarships to veterans who graduate from the Golden West Police Academy training program.
Alzheimer’s Family Services Center in Huntington Beach works to improve the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. DreamCatchers furnish various items needed to augment the goal of providing a daily schedule of stimulating activities and exercise.
Silver Anchor works with the Huntington Beach Hospital’s adult behavioral outpatient program to provide its patients with many essentials, including clothing, personal hygiene supplies and holiday gift bags throughout the year.
Support for Our Seniors gives local seniors grocery certificates and ACCESS passes. These are distributed to seniors in need at the discretion of social workers at the Senior Center in Central Park, Huntington Beach.
Therapeutic Riding Center in Huntington Beach uses horses to provide physical therapy for severely handicapped children and young adults. DreamCatchers provides scholarships for students whose families cannot afford this therapy due to financial hardship..

Operation School Bell® –
Elementary
Elementary school students are brought to Assistance League to “shop” for brand new clothing. They all leave with a huge bag of new clothes, wide grins and a renewed sense of confidence.
Operation School Supplies
School supplies are delivered to Ada County schools so students can start the school year with the same supplies as their classmates.
Baby Bundles
Provides newborn clothing and supplies to families in need in local hospitals. Every new baby deserves to go home in a new outfit, with diapers and other essentials!
Empowering Youth
Provides basic household items, non-perishable food, and a handmade quilt to 18-year old youth aging out of foster care.
Operation School Bell® – Teen Retail
Middle and Junior high school students shop for clothes at a local retail store.
Cinderella’s Closet
Ada County high school students rent formal wear for a nominal fee. Events such as Prom and Homecoming should be a fairy-tale for all high school students!
Project Hearing
Provides hearing aids, special equipment and educational grants to hearing impaired Ada County residents.
History in the Bown House
Step back in time and tour this 1879 restored home. Period dressed volunteers teach real-life, interactive history lessons on how our forefathers lived.

Operation School Bell®
The organization continues to grow and has made inroads in meeting the needs of nearly 9,000 children living in poverty in Southern Utah. The county school district notes that nearly 1,000 of the 31,000 students registered to attend school in 2016 were homeless and in desperate need of basic clothing and supplies. These children and others living in low-income households are the target population for Operation School Bell.
Thanks again to all the members of Assistance League in the St George area and to all those who are willing to generously donate their monetary support. We appreciate all you do to make our students’ lives better!!

Shopping Events
Low income school-aged children receive new clothes, shoes, hand-knitted hats, and hygiene supplies. When a child’s basic needs are met, they can focus on their education and have a better opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. Last fiscal year, 722 children from 24 schools ranging across the county from Enterprise to Hildale and Colorado City received new school clothing, shoes and supplies.

Literacy
Operation School Bell focuses on enhancing literacy opportunities for children in need:
- Materials for summer reading and preschool literacy programs for 580 students;
- 900 children heard a Dr. Seuss story read to them by our volunteers for Read Across America;
- 150 preschoolers received three books and heard the book read to them by our volunteers;
- 504 books to Dual Language Immersion students learning Chinese and Spanish at 2 schools.
In addition, Adopt a School made an impact with robotics equipment for summer camps.
We are so grateful to the Assistance League for the amazing preschool reading program we were privileged to participate in! We all loved having grandmas and grandpas come into our classroom to read with us. Thank you from the bottom of our preschool hearts!

Provides a flexible, rapid-response strategy by which Assistance League of Southern Utah can respond to specific community needs.
I have heard from many students that they say they feel like “a normal kid”. One student kept the price tags and taped them to his bedroom wall, saying, “I’ve never had something with a price tag before! I got to take off my very own price tags.”

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL
Operation School Bell® distributed new clothes and shoes to 2,777 pre-kindergarten through high school students in Salem-Keizer schools and the Chemawa Indian School. All clothing requests are initiated by school counselors.

PUPPETS WITH PURPOSE
To promote healthy living and prevent bullying, interactive puppet performances were presented to 2,614 elementary students.

In partnership with Salem Public Library’s Bookmobile, 5,471 students participated in reading and literacy programs.

OPERATION ART ADVENTURES
More than 11,300 elementary, middle and high school students participated in theater activities or received art supplies for their schools. One middle school was given badly needed musical instruments for their band program.

OPERATION BOOKSHELF
In conjunction with the Salem Public Library, 100 homebound adult patrons received over 1,200 deliveries of library materials. Contact Salem Public Library for information on receiving this service.

AUXILIARY INDEPENDENT LIVING
30 young adults leaving foster care to live on their own received mentoring, transition assistance and their own housekeeping items.
SERVING THOSE IN NEED
About 21% of Salem-Keizer District students live at or below the poverty level, which is $24,250 annually for a family of four. In addition there are approximately 800 homeless students. Nearly 60% of students receive free or reduced lunches.

DENTAL SCREENING PROGRAM
Assistance League, in partnership with the Salem-Keizer Dental Health Solutions for Children Program, screened 6,395 elementary students.

7,000 students received backpacks and school supplies in 64 schools throughout the school year.
Requests for school supplies are initiated by school counselors.

Operation School Bell®
Since 2005, we have provided new school clothes to 6,041 children of enlisted military families at Camp Pendleton. Since 1998, we have provided new school clothes to 14,460 children in five Coastal North County San Diego school districts. We have also provided financial assistance to 221 local school children that allows them to attend sixth-grade outdoor science camp since 2011.
Assault Survivor Kits® (ASK)
We have provided new clothes and toiletries to 4,839 individuals since 1998 when they have presented to a San Diego County Sexual Assault Response Team after experiencing a sexual assault. We have also provided snacks and other items such as kleenex, pens and notepads to individuals when they attend the hearing of their sexual assault case in court.
Knifty Knitters
We have provided 6,515 hand-knitted items to various organizations since 1998. Newborns at Miramar Naval Marine Society and Balboa Naval Hospital have received knitted hats, blankets, scarves and hats. Homeless teens have received scarfs and hats. We also donate knitted scarves to Operation Gratitude to be shipped to our military men and women.
Flowers For Seniors
Flowers For Seniors is our newest program. We deliver flower arrangements to Assisted Living facilities.
Caring Critters
Caring Critters is a new project we began in January 2017. These adorable critters are handmade by our volunteers and donated to children at Rady’s Chadwick Center. They are given to children facing traumatic life events.
